A rare and coveted Pleats Please by Issey Miyake dress from the collaboration with Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, Guest Artist Series No. 4, 1998. It can be worn as a dress or a jacket. The mind-boggling process of creating the design by sprinkling gunpowder onto the patterns and evoking a detonation is shown in the YouTube video above (an even more prolonged and more detailed version here). Asymmetrical cut, pleated throughout. Bat look shoulders and sleeves! 100% polyester. Made in Japan. A dress of this series is held by the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute archives. They state: "Miyake launched the Pleats Please Guest Artist Series in 1996. For the fourth collaboration in the series, Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang used gunpowder explosions to burn images of dragons, a Chinese symbol for life, onto a group of finished white garments. Superb black fur coat designed by Fendi in the 1980s, made in Italy. Original inner label. The fur is entirely made of black lapin and has a substantial length, up to above the knee. The fur has a fascinating spotted weave, which, with the effect of light, gives the garment luminosity and elegance. The coat is double-breasted, allowing it to be worn under whatever garment you prefer, from a casual dress to a more elegant and pompous one. This is one of Jean Paul Gaultier's rare and runway presented quilted satin coats from his A/W 1985-1986 collection. I am happy to have found documentation of different-coloured twins of this design walking the runway of that year. Please see the reference photos. The very elegant long coat features a flared cut and wide lapels. It is meant to be worn oversized. Fully padded with a beautiful organic shaped quilting. Love that the reverse of the lapels and the inside of the sleeves' cuffs is quilted into squares. The long loose sleeves can be worn either turned-down or turned-up showing that differing quilting. Two patch pockets. The design has no closure and is fully lined in a black silky satin with tonal tiny dots. Labelled "Jean Paul Gaultier pour Gibo' Made in Italy" and tagged a French vintage size 42. Due to its cut and open front it will fit a variety of sizes. Extremely well-made, this coat is a collectible and wearable piece of fashion history! The coat belonged to one of my couture clients from Munich, Germany, and has not been on the market prior to this. Excellent vintage condition.
